THE climax of Skipton Auction Mart’s primestock year will take place at the end of this month with the annual Christmas sales and Great Northern pork pie competition.

It will feature the pick of the prime cattle, lambs and pigs from leading local and regional farmers, with the majority purposely prepared for the fixture on November 30. The event attracts both retail and wholesale butchers who compete to buy meat for Christmas tables.

The sixth annual pork pie competition will see a Roses battle between Yorkshire and Lancashire butchers, farm shops and bakers. Janet Green and Rob Ogden, from four times winner Farmhouse Fare in Skipton, are the judges.

Competition entries will be auctioned in aid of Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope and Brooklands School in Skipton. The event is open to the public and regularly attracts around 1,000 people. A new feature this year is a Santa’s grotto with Chris Pearson, who runs Pearson Farm Supplies, and Linda Beckwith, who manages the auction mart shop, giving out presents.
