THE cricket team at a Bradford primary school is ending the year on a high after impressive showings in several tournaments.

In its first year of playing competitively, the team from Southmere Primary School in Great Horton, managed to put on great performances in the Bradford finals, reach the semi-finals of the West Yorkshire finals and then finish with a strong showing in the Yorkshire finals.

The school now hopes that the team's success will inspire younger pupils and help the school become a cricketing powerhouse.

Shazad Bashir, PE co-ordinator at the school, said: "It has been a great achievement for the children, and they have done really well. I think this set of children have learned a lot, including about playing in a team. The team have progressed for the last few years but this year they took it to another level.

"They've really set the standard for other children to carry on in future years. They have made the school proud and the local community proud.

"A lot of the team are in year six and are leaving this year, so we're going to miss them but I hope they get to play at a higher level or even a professional level."
