A DUO sent police on a wild goose chase by making up a story about having a shotgun pointed at them, a court heard.

Mohammed Awais, 19, and Mohammed Muneeb, 29, both of Castle Road, Keighley, told officers a car pulled up alongside their own vehicle and that the people inside threatened them and brandished the weapon.

Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' Court heard that police took statements, examined cars, checked CCTV footage, analysed phones and arrested and interviewed suspects.

However, police identified "a number of inconsistencies" in the accusations and Muneeb then told officers he wasn't actually there at the time of the alleged incident.

The court also heard, in mitigation, that the story came about because the duo were worried about another family member.

Magistrates told them: "We take a very dim view of what you have done. Police have too much to do without running round after stories.

"Don't do anything so stupid again."

They were fined £100 each and told to pay £85 costs and a surcharge of £20.
