A PRIMARY school has changed its security procedures after a four-year-old boy with special needs slipped away from its grounds unnoticed by staff.

Kain Dixon, who attends reception class at Newhall Park Primary School in Bierley, Bradford, was found to be missing when his mum Becky Wood arrived to collect him on Monday.

After all the other pupils had been collected by their parents, Miss Wood said she asked staff where her son was to find they did not realise he had gone.

Kain was then found by her car parked further along Newhall Road by his cousin and brought back to the school site.

He suffers from epilepsy, and global development delay, which is usually defined by the child being diagnosed with having a lower intellectual functioning than what is perceived as ‘normal’.

It is usually accompanied by having significant limitations in communication.

Miss Wood, 25, of Meadowcroft Rise, Bierley, said she is "on edge" after the incident and feared he could have had an epileptic fit.

She said: "It's bang out of order. This should not have happened.

"The teachers did not even realise he had gone missing.

"I feel really let down by the school. I'm really on edge now, is he going to do it again?

"It should happen to any kid but especially one who has special needs and needs to be supervised.

"What is he had had a fit at the side of the road and had been on his own? It's just scary as a mum.

"Something needs to be done. Anybody could have picked him up.

"He had got out of the reception, through school and then the main door. His cousin found him and brought him back to school.

"Kain is meant to have 25 hours support from teachers at the school."

Helen Scarth and Nicola Gatenby, co-head teachers at Newhall Park Primary School, said: “We have met the family and explained the circumstances of how this happened.

"We have worked with the family to provide additional support when bringing Kain to school and picking him up at home time.

“We take safeguarding extremely seriously and have rigorous policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety of our pupils. "Serving the different needs of all our pupils is very important to us and we work closely in partnership with parents to do just that."

“Following our investigations into this incident we have changed the procedures in school to prevent this happening again.”

Details of the incident involving Kain comes after the Telegraph & Argus reported last week that two three-year-old boys had left their schools unnoticed earlier this month.

A boy walked out of his nursery at Killinghall Primary and Nursery School, Bradford Moor, and Kayden Newitt, who attends the nursery at Carrwood Primary School, Eversley Drive, Holme Wood, went missing after he had walked out of the site through the school's car park.
