A PAIR of "pathetic" burglars have been jailed today for breaking into and ransacking a Shipley supermarket.

Daniel Lawther, 35, and Martin Penman, 48, caused £1,800 worth of damage after trying to force their way into the Wisla supermarket on Kirkgate using a garden fork at around 6am on January 30.

They were caught by police with £870 in cash from the shop's till, plus quantities of cigarettes and miniature bottles of spirits.

Prosecutor Camille Morland told Bradford Crown Court that Lawther, who was on licence from prison at the time of the offence, attempted to steal the goods to fund a crack cocaine habit.

Penman, described as being "affected by drink and drugs" at the time of his arrest, breached two community orders by committing the offence.

The pair, both of Valley Road, Shipley, asked for two other offences of burglary of commercial premises, which occurred on the same night, to be taken into account.

Sentencing them to 18 months each in prison, Judge Jonathan Rose said: "You're a team, but a pretty pathetic team if the truth be told.

"Each of you engages in this type of criminal activity on a regular basis, and you show no commitment to leading a decent and honest life.

"I see no alternative to an immediate custodial sentence in each case."
