A WOMAN who worked as a store detective in a Morrisons shop in Bradford during the 1960s celebrates her 100th birthday today.

May Waters worked at one of the supermarket's first outlets, in Bolton Road, for five years during the 1960s, including a stint in store security looking out for potential shoplifters.

She remembers Sir Ken Morrison's mother, Hilda, selling broken biscuits on a market which started the empire.

The great grandmother married Joseph, who was in the Royal Navy, in 1942 and the family later lived in Gibraltar, Hong Kong and Malta.

Mr Waters died of asbestos poisoning on his 65th birthday in 1983.

Bradford-born Mrs Waters was given flowers, champagne and a giant cookie with '100' decorated on it during a surprise celebration as she shopped at Morrisons in Worth Way, Keighley, earlier this month.

Staff held the party as a thank her for her loyalty towards Morrisons.

Mrs Waters has stayed loyal to the supermarket chain and is accompanied by her son, Philip Waters, on her weekly shopping trip to Morrisons.

Mr Waters, 61, of Wilsden, said: "She worked as a store detective and caught a couple of people and she was good at that. They used to have her at the end of the aisles to make sure everything was kosher.

"She was vigilant and would go up to someone if they were doing no good.

"She did a bit of everything at Morrisons, but she did not go back to work after she left Morrisons.

"Mum won't go in any other supermarket, even today."

He said his mum was "lively and fairly fit for her age."

"She still cleans up and comes shopping with me," he added.

A family party will be held in Cullingworth today to mark the milestone birthday.

Granddaughter Sarah Darling, 31, said Mrs Waters still liked singing and dancing and hoped to give a speech at her birthday celebration.

"She is looking forward to her party. She is getting her hair done and has got a new outfit but won't tell us what colour it is.

"We have a lot of family coming over for the party and my aunt is coming over from France," she said.

"She tried out another supermarket for a week but she didn't like it so she went back to Morrisons."

Mrs Waters still lives independently in a flat in Wilsden.
