FAMILY and friends gathered to help celebrate the 100th birthday of Nelly Meller yesterday as she passed the milestone.

Mrs Meller, who was born in Leeds, spent many years in the Thornton and Allerton areas of Bradford, before moving to Holme House Care Home in Gomersal more than two years ago.

It was there that her family gathered yesterday to help her celebrate with a party, a buffet and a cake.

Mrs Meller, who was married to John with whom she had two sons David and Neil, has five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

David Meller, who lives in Tong, described his mum as very independent and sprightly despite her years.

He said: "She's still as independent as she can be and lived on her own after my dad died about 20 years ago. It's only in recent years that she moved into the care home near us."

He added that her hobbies over the years have included dancing, crown green bowling, knitting, sewing and going on many holidays.

"She recently had a stint knitting poppies for the Royal British Legion poppy appeal, making around £20 for the charity," he added.

As part of the celebrations the care home arranged some entertainment for the afternoon and family members were able to attend with a second cake later in the day.
