A SPEEDING driver who hit and killed a disabled dad as he crossed the road on his mobility scooter, was today jailed for four years.

Victim Michael McDermott, 70, died after he was hurled more than 80 feet from the scooter by the force of the impact with the powerful Seat Leon Cupra, on Leeds Road, Bradford, on February 20 this year.

Uninsured Najeeb Hussain, 23, was driving the car at nearly twice the 30mph speed limit when he struck the scooter, which was shunted more than 60 feet on the car bonnet.

After the accident, Hussain, of Addison Avenue, Bradford Moor, left the scene and went into hiding for three days.

Bradford Crown Court was told a witness described Hussain's driving as "irresponsible, selfish and reckless".

Hussain pleaded guilty to causing Mr McDermott's death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving while uninsured and unlicensed. He had been banned from driving three times, the last time only two months before the accident.
