A YOUNG man's family pledged in court to keep him out of trouble after he was spared an immediate jail sentence for driving while disqualified and failing to stop for the police.

Khalid Hussain, 22, was caught at the wheel of a VW Polo on Friday, November 13, while serving an 18 month ban for dangerous driving, Bradford Crown Court heard on Friday.

Hussain, of Grisedale Close, Great Horton, Bradford, was ordered to stop after the police spotted cracked and defective lights on the vehicle at 3.30am.

Hussain, who was with his girlfriend, drove into Aberdeen Place, Lidget Green, Bradford, where he abandoned the car and fled on foot.

He was chased and detained and later pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, having no licence and failing to stop.

Prosecutor Jeremy Lindsay said Hussain was in breach of a suspended prison sentence imposed by the court on June 24, 2014, for dangerous driving.

He was banned from driving for 18 months after leading the police on a 60mph pursuit in January, 2014.

Hussain, who was ordered stop on Quaker Lane, Little Horton, because his brake lights were defective, hit a mosque wall and did 70mph in a 30 zone during the lengthy chase.

He was arrested after his fingerprints were found in the green Honda he was driving.

Hussain's barrister, Ken Green, said he was due to start a job in a Bradford coffee shop.

His family, who were in court, were very supportive and anxious to keep an eye on him in the future.

He was already taking steps to get his driving licence back by starting lessons again to take the extended retest.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC sentenced Hussain to a 12 month community order with a six month curfew between 9pm and 7am.

He imposed a rehabilitation order with the probation service and a six month residence order.

Hussain was banned from driving for 12 months.

Before passing sentence, the judge asked Hussain's elder brother if he behaved himself at home and was assured that he did.

Judge Durham Hall asked family members to ensure Hussain stayed at home and kept out of trouble.
