A PROTESTERS' group has called for Bradford Council and Miller Homes to look again into the safety of a road leading to a major housing construction site following a lorry crash.

The yellow Scania truck damaged a white BMW and a garden wall outside a house in Hemingway Road, Apperley Bridge, on April 26.

Although the vehicle was not connected to the building of the 267-home Brompton Fold development by Miller Homes, which was approved by Bradford Council in 2014, residents in the area believe the crash reinforces their safety concerns.

Rupy Hayre, 36, a member of the Apperley Bridge Residents' Group, said it was a warning that Hemingway Road was not suitable, or safe, for plant vehicles to use to access the Brompton Fold construction site as it was too narrow.

In response, Miller Homes stressed that the lorry involved in the crash had no connection with the building work taking place at Brampton Fold and it had a traffic management plan in place which was agreed with Bradford Council as part of the conditions for planning consent.

Mrs Hayre said: "Nobody wished anything like this to happen.

"The road is too narrow and the junction is dangerous.

"I would urge Bradford Council and Miller Homes to hold a full investigation into what has happened with this crash and how they plan to stop anything like this happening again.

"I would call for more safety measures there.

"We, as local residents, have put forward our concerns to Bradford Council's highways and planning departments and Miller Homes, previously, about this road not being suitable, or safe, for plant vehicles in order to access the Brompton Fold site.

"This incident evidences that our concerns are very real and should never have been disregarded.

"I am, of course, thankful that no-one was hurt during this incident but the outcome could have been very different, with school children walking to local schools at this time of the morning and elderly community members using the canal for recreational morning walks."

A Miller Homes spokesman said: "We have been made aware of an incident in Hemingway Road on Tuesday and wish to clarify that the lorry involved had no connection whatsoever with our operations at Brompton Fold.

"At Brompton Fold we have a traffic management plan in place which was approved by the council as part of our planning conditions.

"We work closely with our subcontractors and suppliers to ensure they adhere to this plan and give due consideration to the local surroundings."

Bradford Council added the traffic conditions surrounding the development were all considered when the scheme was given the go-ahead.

A council spokesman said: "Local traffic conditions were considered before planning permission was granted."
