CAKES and cards including congratulations from the Queen helped mark Beryl Spencer's 100th birthday today.
The centenarian, who moved to Woodleigh Residential Home in Brewery Lane, Queensbury, nine years ago to be nearer to daughter Linda Spencer, had a big family party and the youngest guest was her eight-month-old granddaughter Ocean.
Mrs Spencer was born in Goole but lived most of her life in Manchester and Lancashire. She worked in a munitions factory in Manchester during the war and shortly after it ended, met her husband James Joseph Spencer who had been a prisoner in the Far East.
Her daughter said her mum was "good for her age" especially having survived a brain haemorrhage some years ago.
She added: "She's loved her special day with lots of family joining in the celebration, some travelled from as far as Wiltshire. She got a card from the Queen and one from the Secretary of State too!"
Mrs Spencer's official birthday was on Tuesday, July 19.
