THE death of Bradford woman Samia Shahid, who is claimed to be the victim of a so-called 'honour killing,' is now being treated as murder.

It was reported that police in Pakistan had launched a murder investigation.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman has confirmed they are aware of the murder investigation.

He said: "We are aware that is what the Pakistan police are saying."

But he said the development did not change West Yorkshire Police's position.

The spokesman said: "It is not our investigation.

"We are continuing to liaise with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office."

Two people, a 32-year-old Bradford woman and a 37-year-old man, who were arrested in connection with alleged threats made to MP Naz Shah, who has taken up Miss Shahid's death with authorities in the UK and Pakistan, have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Miss Shahid's husband, Mukhtar Ali Kazam, has met with a senior police officer in Pakistan. He is also seeking an exhumation order through the Pakistani courts to exhume her body for an independent post-mortem.

Miss Shahid, 28, from Oak Lane, Manningham, died in Pakistan last week after flying there when she was told her father was seriously ill.

Her husband was told by her family that she had died of a heart attack and been buried. But an initial autopsy proved inconclusive.

Miss Shahid is said to have incurred the displeasure of her family when she married Mr Kazam against their wishes and went to live with him in Dubai.

Her father, who is in Pakistan, has said allegations of an honour killing were "lies."

Ms Shah told the T&A that Syed Ibne Abbas, Pakistan High Commissioner to the UK, has informed her that the country's interior minister has been given a briefing on the situation and is "personally overseeing" the case.

He has appointed two of the most senior investigators in Pakistan to take care of the investigation.

She said: "This gives me some re-assurance that things will move forward.

"He has said they are expecting some kind of forensic results as soon as the next week or so."
