An uncle of a teenager who died in a horror crash in Bradford delivered an emotional plea at the youngster's funeral today.

Thousands of mourners gathered at the Hanfia Masjid Mosque, in Ambler Street, Manningham, to pay their respects to Adnan Shafiq.

The 17-year-old was killed in a car crash on Shipley Airedale Road, Bradford city centre, on Tuesday. He was a passenger in a Seat Leon that crashed into a metal road sign at about 12.15am.

One of his uncles, Mohammad Ishtiaq, told an estimated 3,000 mourners - some of whom were forced to stand outside the mosque because of the number of people in attendance - that lessons needed to be learned from Adnan's death.

Directing his words at younger mourners, he said: "We do not want to see you coming here, lying here, for yours.

"We don't want deaths like this. You are each very important.

"Everyone that knew him, take this message and pass it on - that you went to a funeral of a 17-year-old.

"Seventeen. This is your golden age."

Mr Ishtiaq spoke of everything in life being too "quick", "fast" and "hasty", and added: "How many more lives do we have to give before the youths realise?"

He added: "We are here today to mourn this young brother. His grandparents and father and mother are here.

"We do not want to see this again and again."

Some of the young men in the congregation broke down in tears, while one mourner, who was among those who viewed Adnan's body in the mosque, said: "He looked very peaceful. To see a young lad like that, it is upsetting."

He added: "It is such a waste, so sad. He was so young."

The driver of the car, an 18-year-old, suffered pelvic injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
