GRAHAM Alexander says he draws inspiration from Stephen Darby every time he walks into the dressing room at Valley Parade.

Bantams boss Alexander, his number two Chris Lucketti and goalkeeping coach Colin Doyle will tackle the first leg of the “March of the Day” to raise funds for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation.

They will join several former players and other members of club staff among the walkers doing the opening leg from Valley Parade to Elland Road today – leaving at 9am.

The weekend trek that will head to Anfield, taking in as many football grounds as possible along the way, is dedicated to Darby and former Huddersfield striker Marcus Stewart as they both battle the deadly disease.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Alexander said: “It’s something that’s bigger than football. It’s people’s lives – people who have been a massive part of football clubs, Stephen Darby in particular with Bradford City.

“His picture is still in the changing room with a quote from him that I find quite inspiring when I read it every time I’m in there.

“I actually looked at the image of him on Tuesday night leaving the stadium. Not belittling what we’re trying to do here but that’s serious issues.

“Chris Lucketti and I both played with Marcus Stewart at different clubs as well. Lenny Johnrose, who we both knew, unfortunately passed away from the same disease a couple of years ago.

“It’s very poignant. There’s a lot of research that needs to go into the illness and for that to happen there needs to be cash.

“We’ll be more than grateful for everyone who can help support the whole weekend.

“It’s a sad state of affairs but if we can take anything from what Stephen and Marcus are going through, it’s how they are facing the problem head on and being proactive about it.

“I feel we can take great inspiration from that.”
