BOSSES at Marks and Spencer are staying tight-lipped about the proposed closure of its store in Bradford

In February, the company announced it was planning to shut its branch in the Broadway shopping centre.

The Telegraph & Argus has asked Marks and Spencer for an update on the proposal - and if a closing date for the store was available - but did not receive a response.

A member of the public told the Telegraph & Argus they telephoned Marks and Spencer customer services this week and asked if there was a closing date for the branch, but they were told this information was not yet available.

The Marks and Spencer store was in the Broadway shopping centre since it opened in 2015.

In February, Vickie Smith, Marks and Spencer regional manager, said: "Shopping habits are changing so we're rotating our store estate and, as part of this transformation, we have today announced to colleagues our proposal to close the M&S Bradford store in the Broadway shopping centre.

"Our priority now is to talk to our colleagues about what this announcement means for them. Should the proposals go ahead, we will offer them alternative roles with M&S wherever possible.

"In recent years, we have invested £20million in our stores in West Yorkshire, including our new 97,000 square foot store at the White Rose shopping centre which opened last year and created over 230 new jobs. And we're looking forward to making further investment this year to renew the food hall at our nearby M&S Pudsey store.

"Over the last ten years, we've also invested more than £120million in our Bradford distribution centre, using innovative tech to build automated systems so we can keep growing our online business.

"Over 1,800 people are employed at the Bradford site and we will invest another £13m this year to keep growing our capacity and serve more customers.

“We would like to thank all our customers who have shopped in the store, and we will be working hard to keep serving them in our other stores in the local area."

When the major retailer announced its plan to shut the store, Shipley Tory MP Philip Davies said: "M&S is a destination shop - people will go to places because there's an M&S.

"It's going to have a devastating impact on the city centre.

"It's unfortunately a vote of no confidence in Bradford."
