A MAN aged 25 with a "truly dreadful record" for driving offences has been jailed for four months for aggravated vehicle taking.

Adeel Khan was labelled by his probation officer as "showing immaturity and a complete disregard for the law" after notching up a string of convictions, including driving carelessly and dangerously, having no licence and repeated offences of driving while disqualified.

Khan, of Chelwood Drive, Allerton, Bradford, was the passenger in a stolen car that rammed a police vehicle and led officers on a three mile pursuit on October 19 last year, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

The offence involved a £15,000 VW Scirocco, stolen from Oldham in a burglary three days earlier, and spotted travelling on the wrong side of the road in Listerhills, Bradford.

Police officers, alerted to a separate incident in the city alleging firearms, were on patrol at 2pm on Allerton Road when they were sent to investigate.

Prosecutor Soheil Khan said they blocked in the Scirocco but it sped off, ramming a patrol vehicle and another car in a bid to evade the law.

The Scirocco, on false number plates, was pursued along Legrams Lane, Clayton Road and Pasture Lane, the court was told.

It hit a car belonging to a member of the public and jumped a red light during the high speed chase.

The police helicopter was scrambled to track the vehicle, which was abandoned by Khan and the driver.

Khan was apprehended shortly afterwards.

He had 14 previous convictions for 29 offences, Mr Khan told the court.

Khan's solicitor advocate, Simon Hustler, said he had changed his attitude since his probation officer wrote the pessimistic report about him in December last year.

He was no longer arrogant and indifferent to the affect his offending had on his family and other road users.

"He understands a custodial sentence will follow," Mr Hustler said.

Judge Peter Benson told Khan: "You have a truly dreadful record for offences of driving while disqualified."

Khan had been sentenced at Bradford Crown Court to 12 months imprisonment for dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and without a licence, two days after committing the aggravated vehicle taking.

He had been due for release but was serving extra time until June because a mobile phone was found in his cell, the court was told.

Judge Benson banned Khan from driving for 12 months, to run concurrently with an existing two year ban.
