A ‘SELFISH’ driver is being investigated by police after he was caught on camera overtaking queuing traffic and shooting through a red light.

The footage was sent to the Telegraph & Argus as part of our Stop the Danger Drivers campaign and has been passed on to the police’s Operation Steerside team.

The driver of a silver Vauxhall Astra overtakes a car waiting at a traffic light and crosses the junction, against a red light, on Duckworth Lane, Bradford.

The vehicle is then almost hit by traffic as it is driven across a T-junction further along the road. The driver went past Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The driver, whose dashboard footage filmed the incident, said: “It’s just ridiculous. I was quite shocked by what I saw.

“They didn’t seem to care that they had gone through the lights.

“This sort of behaviour happens every single day in Bradford. It has got worse over the last couple of years.”

Sargeant Cameron Buchan, who is in charge of Operation Steerside, which was set-up on the back of the T&A’s campaign, condemned the Astra driver and said the police would investigate.

He said the incident would be classed as failing to comply with a red traffic light and driving without due care and attention.

“It shows selfishness. That selfishness put other drivers at risk. Selfishness is what underlines the problem we are having with such driving. It shows a disregard for other people,” Sgt Buchan said, adding that an accident could have been caused.

He said the incident was an example of why Operation Steerside had been established.

“We are getting some people for failing to stop at a red light. Operation Steerside is coming across them”, Sgt Buchan said.

Councillor Fozia Shaheen (Lab, Toller) also criticised the poor driving.

“It’s outrageous that someone has driven like that in what is a built-up area.

“It was the weekend and there would have been a lot of families out. It’s disgusting that people are driving in such a manner,” she said.

“The local authority is spending a lot of money to put measures into place to make sure people abide by, and stop, when they are at a red light.

“Drivers need to take responsibility. They need to understand what they are doing.”
