POLICE have urged people to keep sending in dash-cam footage of dangerous driving – as prosecutors bring charges against a motorist caught on video in Bradford.

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who is leading the Operation Steerside crackdown on the district’s roads, said police had started proceedings against the driver of a car caught on camera in Moorhead Lane, Shipley.

But Sgt Buchan also warned that people who submit footage must be prepared to give their name so that police can take matters forward.

A police spokesman said: “We hope that Steerside is making a difference on the roads in Bradford and that people are feeling safer and reassured by our efforts to tackle bad driving across the district.

“We are also grateful for the public’s support in reporting incidents and supplying dash-cam footage to ourselves and the Telegraph & Argus for further investigation.

“We do, however, ask that all dash-cam footage submitted is clearly stamped with a time and date, and that the owner passes their details to the police, as they may need to be contacted as a witness at a later stage.”

Police yesterday released the latest weekly Steerside figures, which show that 137 drivers were caught on the district’s roads last week.

Seventy-five drivers were caught speeding, including one doing at least 60mph in a 30mph-zone, 24 were spotted not wearing a seatbelt, 24 were caught using a mobile phone at the wheel, eight were driving without insurance and six had committed other road-related offences. A total of five vehicles were seized.

Overall, 3,455 dangerous drivers have been caught by Steerside officers since the operation began in February.

Sgt Buchan said: “The next landmark of 3,500 is going to come and it is going to go. The next landmark after that is 4,000, which will also come and go.

“The point I want to make is it is something that is continuous. We are committed to improving road safety in Bradford.”

Sgt Buchan added: “I enjoy the closer relationship this has given us with the public and the press. I am very grateful for the public’s enthusiasm.”

A total of 1,239 speeding drivers have been caught during the operation, ahead of 1,192 who were caught not wearing a seatbelt.
