WEST Yorkshire’s police and crime commissioner has been urged to resolve Bradford’s dangerous driving problem as it is revealed the district’s ‘quad squad’ has seized its 500th illegal bike.

Councillor Simon Cooke, leader of the Conservatives on Bradford Council, wants residents to ensure Mark Burns-Williamson prioritises road safety in the district.

He reacted after seeing a video featured by the Telegraph & Argus - as part of its Stop The Danger Drivers campaign - of nine quad and off-road bikes being ridden through a red traffic light in Cutler Heights.

Cllr Cooke said: “I am delighted that the T&A has been raising awareness of anti-social driving by highlighting serious incidents and I hope that this campaign and people’s own experiences of the problem have motivated many residents to respond to the consultation carried out by the Police and Crime Commissioner, which should influence the priorities of the police between 2016 and 2021.

“Anyone driving around Bradford city centre and the built up areas regularly, particularly in the evenings, will witness many incidents of people jumping red lights, parking very dangerously, speeding at way above the speed limits in areas with lots of pedestrians, and doing U-turns into fast moving, oncoming traffic.

“It really is alarming to see the level of risk these people put themselves and other people at. This seems to be more of a problem in Bradford than in the rest of West Yorkshire and the Police and Crime Commissioner needs to make resolving this a priority.”

Mr Burns-Williamson's office was contacted for comment. He has previously supported the T&A's campaign, saying he was aware that bad driving was a problem in Bradford and was speaking to police and partners about it.

The Bradford Anti-Social Behaviour Bike Team’s 500th seizure - since July 2014 - was a moped that was dumped by its rider in Fagley when he saw police.

PC Dave Hitchcocks, of the bike team, said: “This 500th seizure is the result of a lot of hard work and effort put in by the team. We have also received a huge amount of assistance from members of the public which has greatly contributed to this figure. I want to pass on the team’s thanks to everyone who has got in touch with us and would like to encourage the residents of Bradford to step up and take a stand against the idiots who blight the communities of Bradford.”

Police are investigating after a pedestrian was hit by a quad bike as she walked near New House Lane, Clayton Heights, on Thursday at 9pm. The girl, 16, suffered knee and back injuries. Witnesses can contact police on 101.
