HIGHTOWN Jets won the Spen Valley Memorial Trophy after beating Bradford-based Palestino 2-1 in the final at Overthorpe Sports Club.

Jets took the lead in the second minute of the Spen Valley League's cup competition for Division One clubs.

Palestino equalised early in the second half but fellow newcomers Jets hit the winner with 20 minutes remaining in what was a great advert for both teams and the league.

The cup was presented by Bob Secker, who is president of both the Spen Valley League and the West Riding County FA.

A minute's silence was respectfully observed before kick-off to remember the 56 victims of the Bradford City fire disaster in 1985.

Palestino may have dropped to third in the table on the back of Idle's 9-4 victory at second-bottom Cleckheaton Sporting but Palestino are still favourites to take the title.

Jets (45 points) and Idle (41) both have two matches left to play but Palestino are on 40 points with seven to go.

They also have a second chance at cup glory when they play the Spen Valley Trophy final against Route One Rovers, again at Overthorpe Sports Club, on Saturday (2.00).

Idle's goals came from Matthew Addy (2), Aaron Irving (2), Luke Gray, Carl Brown, Jack Strudwick, Callum Dowerty and Ryan Mitchell.

Rovers clinched their place in the decider with a 4-2 midweek home win against Savile Youth, also at Overthorpe.

Athletico are still odds-on to finish fourth, despite a 2-1 home defeat to Fox & Hounds Batley, who scored all three goals.
