BRADFORD boxer Darren Tetley will dedicate his next fight in memory of the Valley Parade fire victims.

The unbeaten welterweight plans to donate his ticket money from Saturday's show in Rotherham to the burns unit.

Tetley, appearing on the Ross Burkinshaw undercard at the Magna Centre, said: "I'm from Bradford and know how much this affected the city.

"With my fight being in the same month as the 30th anniversary, I thought it was only right that I should do something."

Tetley, who hopes to walk to the ring accompanied by the 'Midland Road' anthem from Valley Parade, is scheduled to face Fonz Alexander of Newark.

His opponent has lost 13 out of 16 professional dates but the real significance for the 6-0 Holme Wood fighter is the length of the contest – it will be his first six-rounder.

Not that it will be a total step into the unknown for Tetley, who regularly goes that long in sparring.

"I've trained harder for this – but I train hard regardless," he said.

"Six rounds isn't new to me because I spar that when I'm preparing for four-rounders. Now I'm fighting six, I've stepped the sparring up to eight rounds.

"But in my eyes, my style is changing with the longer fights. Now I'm trying to hold the centre of the ring more; being a presence and trying not to be knocked back.

"You don't use up as much energy that way and make your opponent move about more.

"I boxed an undefeated lad last time and now it's time to step it up again. I felt there was no other option but to do six rounds.

"I know Fonz comes to fight but this is more about me being able to show I can step up a distance."

It will be the southpaw's third bout in three months – but while he plans to take a break from the competitive ring afterwards, there is unlikely to be a let-up in gym time.

Tetley said: "Once I've had this fight, I'll stay in the gym just working on a few things. We'll go over some tapes of my fights and see where I need to improve."
