BRADFORD Park Avenue boss Martin Drury is aware that there were no points on offer for the club's last five games – but he has still been delighted with the results.

Avenue have won four of their friendly fixtures so far against a variety of opponents from three different steps on the football pyramid.

They have conceded just two goals in those games and both were scored by National League clubs.

"I've been very happy with the effort and attitude of the players and delighted with the wins we've had," said Drury.

"I know what matters is the serious stuff, and that hasn't started yet, but I think winning games is important whatever is riding on them.

"If it's a league game, a cup tie or even a friendly, if my team is winning – and winning well – then I'm happy.

"It breeds a mentality, a winning mentality, and if you are going to be successful, you need that edge.

"All of the games have been tough – the sides from the Northern Counties East League gave us a stern test and we also played Farsley, Halifax and Guiseley."

Avenue's 3-1 win over the Lions was arguably their best pre-season result and it is the one Drury was happiest with.

However, despite a 1-0 loss to Guiseley's National League counterparts FC Halifax Town, the Horsfall boss felt that was also a good performance.

"Apart from the first 20 minutes against Halifax, we have played well against two very good sides from a league above," he said.

"I think that says a lot about our preparation for the coming season and about where we want to be and what we want to achieve.

"I'm not saying we will win our division this season but we hope to be challenging for promotion."

The club have confirmed that Nathan Turner has been offered and signed a contract tying him to Horsfall Stadium for the coming season.

The versatile 22-year-old was initially signed by then Avenue boss John Deacey last summer following his release by Leeds United but he had a nightmare season due to injuries.

Drury invited Turner back for pre-season training and, after proving his fitness, the new manager was quick to snap him up.
