DAVID Willey is a great addition to our squad at Yorkshire.

He will complement our one-day cricket because he’s explosive at the top of the order and opens the bowling with the new white cherry.

I think every cricket fan in the country is excited by him, and one or two other counties at least would have wanted to acquire his talents. For us to be able to get him, it’s a great signing for the future.

We’ve obviously produced a plethora of local players at Yorkshire, it’s something we pride ourselves on. But when a talent like that becomes available, it’s almost too good an opportunity not to seize upon.

I toured Australia with him the winter before last for an England Performance Programme camp, and he’s a good guy.

He plays his cricket in a similar fashion to how we play our cricket at Yorkshire. He plays hard on and off the field.

He’s exciting, and he will take a forwards step rather than a backwards step, and that’s what we want from our players.

He can play a massive part in our one-day cricket immediately, and will be pushing hard to break into our four-day team during the next few years.

Today, he will take part in T20 Blast Finals Day at Edgbaston with his Northamptonshire side. It is a stage he knows well having won man-of-the-match in the final a couple of years ago, and I hope he does well again.

Whether I will be watching, though, I’m not 100 per cent sure yet because I’ve scheduled in a barbecue at home.

The weather might yet have the final say and force me inside in front of the TV.
