TREVOR Heylings, who has been named umpire of the year in the Dales Council League for the fifth time in six years, says he has no wish to officiate in a higher-standard league.

The 59-year-old from Drighlington, who has previously umpired in the Central Yorkshire League and the Huddersfield Central League, admitted: "I like to think of myself as having the respect of the players and being fair with my decisions and taking my time over lbws etc.

"But I wouldn't want the pressure of umpiring in say the Bradford League, knowing that if I made a wrong decision it could end a player's contract."

Trevor, a fund-raiser for Bradford Park Avenue Football Club who used to play cricket in the Huddersfield Central League and the Dewsbury & District Sunday League and, at T20 level in the Central Yorkshire League, has been involved in the sport for 40 years and admits that he tries to help youngsters when they are bowling.

He remembered: "One young lad was bowling from wide of the crease and stood no chance of getting an lbw, so I told him to get closer to the stumps, and he got three lbws!"

Trevor, who has also stood in the Dales Council League's Pool Paper Mills Cup final once and the Cawthorne Cup three times, as well as in league representative matches, picked up his award at the Dales Council League's annual dinner at the Bradford Hotel.

Bradford Moor's Naveed Andrabi won two awards – the A Division batting (785 league runs and also 246 in the cup, only two short of the aggregate record) and all-rounder (33 wickets) – but Pudsey St Lawrence's Oliver Beckett bettered that with three trophies, picking up the under-18 batting, under-18 wicket-keeping (Roy Webster Trophy) and the junior player of the year (Les Thompson Trophy).

Other double winners were Woodhouse's M Faisal Bhatti (B Division bowling and most league wickets, 68) and Thornbury's Hassan Khan (C Division batting, average 70.00) and the Stan Stafford Trophy for most runs (910).
