JONNY Walker needs to refine his game if the Bulls are to get the best out of him, according to head coach Jimmy Lowes.

Bradford lad Walker will feature again in tomorrow’s trip to Whitehaven and could start the match with a number of props currently injured.

The imposing front-rower caught the eye when playing against the Bulls during loan spells at Whitehaven and London last season.

“Jonny’s just a tough player and he did stand out against us last year because of how he plays,” said Lowes.

“His game needs refining to get the best out of him and he is a penalty machine, but he has got some qualities that we do like.

“If he could just refine some of the other stuff then he will be a handful.

“He’s got some skill and there was a lovely pass out of a tackle against Featherstone.

“It’s just about eradicating the penalties so that his rugby skill comes to the fore.”

New signing Rhys Lovegrove could make his debut and Lowes added: “It’ll be a tough game but I wouldn’t expect anything less in Cumbria, especially with the recent weather.

“It’s likely to be a heavy field and that should make it a pretty tough encounter.

“We showed grit and determination to win at Whitehaven last season and we’re going to have do so again.”

Whitehaven were stuffed 52-6 at Halifax in their opening game but Lowes said: “I’ve watched the video and they had a good dig during the first half.

“They’re a completely different side at home and it will be a tough game.”
