STUART McCall admits he has no magic wand following his return to Valley Parade as he declared: Even Jose Mourinho failed last season!

The legendary former City midfielder was last week handed a two-year contract for what is his fourth spell at the club and second as manager.

McCall is confident he is a far better boss for his experiences at Motherwell, Rangers and the Scotland national side following his first spell with the Bantams.

And while he says he has no secret formula to guarantee success, he vowed there would be no shortage of desire and hard work.

McCall said: “I learned a lot down the years from Walter Smith and Gordon Strachan has also been terrific, but for me you need several things to be successful as a manager.

“Even then there are no guarantees and you look at Jose Mourinho with Chelsea last season.

“He’s a fantastic manager but he’s had a failure there.

“For me, the key thing is man-management skills and getting the best out of your players.

“It’s something I relish and enjoy – trying to get the best out of your players.

“Now not everybody is going to be a world-beater and players will miss chances.

“But as long as they give everything for the football club that’s all I and the supporters can ask for.

“I’ve got a lot of the same principles and values that need to be maintained and will be maintained.”

McCall is a big admirer of what Phil Parkinson achieved during his Valley Parade tenure but even the new Bolton boss had his tough periods at the helm.

McCall added: “We are going to lose games and there will be disappointments.

“Phil had those disappointments, even though he had a great deal of success, and there will be ups and downs.

“It’s not a disaster if you lose two games and it’s about not getting too high or low.

“You’ve got to maintain a focus and have an ambition of where you want the club to go.”
