CITY are eyeing up a possible move for Bristol City’s Kieran Agard, the Telegraph & Argus understands.

The 26-year-old former Rotherham striker or winger has a year left on his Ashton Gate contract but boss Lee Johnson is considering trying to cash in now.

Stuart McCall is in the market for another forward and Agard, who held talks with League One rivals Charlton earlier in the summer, might fit the bill.

McCall, who has dismissed any interest in Bury’s Leon Clarke, has two frontmen on trial this week – including fit-again Polish striker Vincent Rabiega, who impressed the Bantams boss before suffering a tight hamstring at Guiseley.

Left back is another position that McCall is keen to strengthen to provide cover for James Meredith.

The Australian is set to resume training today after sitting out the last two friendlies with a calf problem.

But McCall is looking for more back up. He admits he would have loved to keep Greg Leigh as competition and is currently looking at two more hopefuls for the position.

The City chief feels they also still need one more in centre midfield despite the capture of Romain Vincelot.

He confirmed their interest in Liverpool’s highly-rated youngster Cameron Brannagan – a talent Jurgen Klopp says has “everything you need” in a midfielder - but City face stiff competition from Wigan.

Liverpool would also expect him to play every game and McCall’s thinking might have changed on that following Vincelot’s arrival. He sees his all-French partnership with Timothee Dieng as the potential starting duo.

McCall said: “Brannagan is one of three or four young players we are looking at as more of an attacking midfielder. But he’s away with the first team at the moment.

“We’re looking to take one more in there on loan. But it might be right up to the (transfer) window (deadline).”

Josh Cullen remains an outside hope, hinging on whether West Ham would let him go to League One again, although he could be seen as a similar type of player to Vincelot.

Meredith’s return to the squad is a timely boost and James Hanson will also be training again this week. McCall aims to have them both back out on the pitch against Carlisle at the weekend.

He added: “They both came through a good session with the physio yesterday and they are running well.

“Meredith will hopefully join in today and we’ll leave big James until Thursday, although he is chomping at the bit. It’s a slightly different issue with him.

“The plan is they will both be available for Saturday.”

But Paul Anderson has a slight niggle and Tony McMahon did not train yesterday after taking a knock on the knee.

City are expected to field a team made up of trialists and young players at Park Avenue tomorrow. Midfielder Liam Agnew will feature again and Rouven Sattelmaier and Joe Cracknell will play a half each in goal.
