THE golfing season is coming to a close, but there was no stopping the West Bradford Ladies in August.

The club had an evening league fixture on August 12, welcoming Bracken Ghyll Ladies.

Although there were some close games, West Bradford finished with a brilliant 6-0 win, as Debs Thompson, Judith Bey and Joanne Plummer shone on a course that was in fantastic condition.

All the Ladies' matches have now been completed and it has been a pretty good year for their teams.

The Evening League team finished fifth overall despite having to forfeit one of their matches (just missing the semi-finals).

The B Team did well too, finishing third overall in Division Two and earning promotion to Division One in the process.

The White Rose Team had a good first year in their new league, winning all their home games against some very good opposition.

As for the club competitions held in August, The Irene Knapton Trophy came first on August 3.

The tournament format sees an accumulation of two medal scores, the final day score plus the best of up to two previously submitted scores.

Previously submitted scores included a nett 62, 68, two 70s, a 72 and a 73.

The final day included nett scores of 68, 73, 74 and 75.

Jenny Chapman came in with a nett 68, and with a previous score of 73, she won the trophy with a total of 141.

The runner up, only one shot adrift, with a total of 142, was Helgi Sonsara. Her scores were 68 and 74.

In third place, again only further shot behind, was Carole Guest, with scores of 62 and 81 totalling 143.

The competition was the closest seen in many years.

The Monthly Medal saw Jenny Chapman come out on top in Division One with a nett score of 68, Jayne Saunders was just behind on 71.

There were a total of 14 pars on the day, with Saunders getting five of them, four on the front nine alone.

Nine players reduced their handicaps between 0.1 and 0.5.

In the Grannies Salver & Monthly Stableford on August 10, Sheila Terry scored a fabulous 43 points.

With three pars on her card, she won the trophy and came first in Division One of the monthly stableford.

Jenny Chapman, winner of the previous week's trophy, came second with 34 points on a countback from Denise Dack.

In Division Two, the winner was Carole Guest, who parred the ninth and scored 36 points.

Second place went to Mavis Kunz with 32 points.

The culmination of two years of medal competitions saw 15 players qualify for the Annual Medal on August 17.

It was lovely to see Alex Gavin playing and she won the Division One Annual Medal with a nett 70, the only result under par.

Not only that, but Gavin had the only birdie with a three on the 10th.

She hit 10 pars overall and reduced her handicap by 0.5.

Pat Sutcliffe came second with a nett 74 and reduced her handicap by 0.3.

Division Two was very close and only two shots separated the top four players of Mavis Kunz, Karen Nixon, Marjorie Sunderland and Helen Shields.

The Annual Medal was won by the latter with a nett 78, even though that total included a nightmarish 16 on the 11th.

Shields was given a nine for handicap purposes on that hole, so still managed to reduce her handicap by 0.9, proving one bad hole does not define a round.

Marjorie Sunderland came second on a countback with a nett 79.

In the Coronation Foursomes Stableford on August 19, Pam Sprint and Denise Dack played in the Area Finals at Ilkley Golf Club.

The duo scored 34 points, which included a two on the second hole where Sprint chipped in.

The winners, who scored 40 points, will go on to play in the Grand Final on the Eden Course at St Andrews.

Fourteen stableford competitions over a two-year period resulted in 18 players qualifying for the two divisions of Annual Stableford on August 24.

Division One was won by Pam Sprint with 38 points, the only result under par and the only person with a birdie. This was a three on the 10th. She also reduced her handicap by 0.4 to 12.8.

Trish Beckett came second with a level par of 36 points and reduced her handicap by 0.1.

Division Two was won by Marjorie Sunderland with 29 points, with Helgi Sonsara finishing second with 27 points.

The competition for the Davies Cup (August 31) is a medal over 18 holes open to all members aged 55 and over.

The Evergreen Cup is played on the same day but is over 15 holes and for members aged 65 and over.

This year, the Davies Cup was won by Judith Bey, with a fantastic score of six under par (gross 97 and nett 66).

She was the only person under par on the day and pulled her handicap by one whole shot.

Trish Beckett came second on a countback from Marjorie Sunderland with gross 100 and nett 72.

The Evergreen Cup was closely contested and went to Pat Sutcliffe, with gross 77 and nett 57. Shields came second on a countback from Marjorie Sunderland with gross 95 and nett 59.
