BRACKEN Ghyll stormed to victory at the Bradford Golf Union’s Team Championship over the weekend, but there were plenty more interesting stories on the course at Keighley too.

Led by Jack Lampkin’s magnificent 66, Bracken Ghyll won by a mammoth 13 strokes.

Addressing the winners, Bradford Union president Simon Tabel said: “The team, Jack, Henry Croft and Jonny Reynolds, produced a great score (210) around Keighley.

“Jack’s 66 was the best individual score of the day too, and he’s a very consistent player who has represented Yorkshire a lot this season.

“On the whole, their team has done well of late, and have won the Yorkshire Championships the last two years, so their victory was no surprise on Sunday.

“But it was the first time they’d ever won our Union’s Team Championship, so it was a good result for them.”

In a sport historically dominated by white men, it was nice to see Habib Khan shoot an excellent 70 on Sunday to help Cleckheaton finish third.

Tabel said: “Habib plays most of his golf for the Halifax-Huddersfield Union, so sadly we don’t get his services in Bradford all that often.

“But he’s a super lad and plays golf to a good standard.

“It was good to see him do well on Sunday and it would be nice to see more Asian lads playing if possible.”

Northcliffe’s B team finished fifth, with that trio consisting of Andy, Oliver and Paddy Young.

Tabel said: “They’re all brothers, the Youngs at Northcliffe.

“Ollie and Paddy were in the initial team, but then there was a drop out, so Andy came in to make up the numbers.”

Veteran golfer Andy Busfield starred for South Bradford, his 70 helping them to finish fourth.

Tabel said: “He’s generally always there or thereabouts in these competitions, and of course he’s the Bradford Union captain this year.

“We’ve had a couple of disappointing Union results in the Yorkshire Inter-District Championship this year, but we have been blooding youngsters.

“We had three juniors playing at Sheffield in our last game, and we’ll put another one in this weekend when we face Halifax-Huddersfield.

“One junior who is certainly worth noting is Benjy Saia. He performed well in shooting 78 for Shipley at the Team Championship, and he won the Yorkshire Under-16 Championship at Easingwold last week too.

“He went round in four under for his 36 holes, and won by five strokes, so we’re all very proud of him in the Union.

“He’s working hard, and he’s getting the recognition he deserves in Yorkshire.”

Back to the Yorkshire Inter-District season, and Tabel said: “There are some strong teams in here.

“Sheffield (who are top) have some of the top-ranked amateurs in Europe for example.

“If we win our last two games against (fellow mid-table sides) Halifax-Huddersfield and Harrogate, we’ll have won four out of seven this season, which I think would be a fine achievement.

“I’d settle for one win, given we’re blooding youngsters.

“That can only build us up nicely for next season and the years to come.”
