IT was a tricky day for all at the Bradford Amateur Strokeplay Championship on Sunday, but one man coped with the conditions at Baildon Golf Club better than anyone else.

Jack Lampkin, of Bracken Ghyll Golf Club, was left glad of his fast start, as despite a late wobble, he held on to win by one stroke from Baildon’s Dan Teece.

Lampkin’s winning score at the marquee Bradford Golf Union event was two over par, and he said: “The conditions were really tricky, firm and fiery, with a bouncy surface.

“Baildon gets like that in hot weather though, so it was just about staying patient, which paid off, certainly in those first seven holes.”

Lampkin was two under at that point, but knew he could not rest on his laurels, saying: “I was speaking to my playing partners during the round, and we were saying we thought someone from Baildon would have a good chance of winning, just being used to the course.

“I knew even the good players would hit a few loose shots, and I did myself.

“There were shots that felt alright when I hit them, but they found trouble.

“That happened to everyone on Sunday though, I just probably found trouble less than anyone else.”

Those comments about a home player winning almost proved accurate, but Lampkin just held off the challenge of Teece.

He said: “Dan’s a great player and I think the only difference in the end was that he didn’t hit as many birdies as I did.

“He was pushing me but I maybe just took my chances a little better.”

Lampkin’s sensational round of 66 helped Bracken Ghyll to the Bradford Union’s prestigious Team Championship title last August, with that and his latest triumph pleasing him for selfless reasons.

He said: “It’s been nice to put Bracken Ghyll Golf Club on the map a little bit.

“It’s not a big club, but it’s a great one, with some talented players coming through.

“It’s nice to help them out by winning like this.”

Bracken Ghyll would get even more exposure if Lampkin could complete an historic double by also winning the Bradford Open in early July at Skipton Golf Club.

He reflected: “It would be nice to do the double, especially since I don’t think anyone has done it since Will Whiteoak in 2012.

“I will be playing up at Skipton and I’ll certainly give it a go and try to win that as well.

“If I keep hitting the ball nicely and make good decisions on the day, I’ll give myself a chance.”

Lampkin confirmed he will not be in action this weekend for the Bradford Union, as they look to win away to East Riding in the Yorkshire Inter-District Union Championship, three weeks after losing their opener to Harrogate.

The Bracken Ghyll star explained: “I had a kid last year who’s only 15 months old, so that’s maybe impacted the amount of golf I play now.

“The inter-district games take a full day to play, so that’s five or six weekends gone if you take part in them.

“I just can’t commit to that any more and it’s time for the younger lads to take the reins in that competition now, or at least the ones who don’t have kids.”
