FOUR weeks on from his sensational Berkshire Trophy victory, Ilkley Golf Club’s Max Berrisford is continuing to make waves on the fairway.

The Steeton-based golfer joined a list of previous star winners including Nick Faldo and Sandy Lyle after his triumph in June, and he’s joined an equally impressive list of names in July.

Berrisford was crowned Ilkley Golf Club’s new ‘Club Scratch’ champion on July 15 after returning in rounds of 69 and 66 to set a new low scoring record in the club's 133-year history, despite the tricky conditions.

Golfing legend Colin Montgomerie, OBE is just one of the names to grace the ‘Club Scratch’ leaderboard at Ilkley Golf Club after he triumphed in 1983.

Berrisford also finished 2nd at the English Men’s U25 Amateur Championship on Friday.

While he didn't have the best start with two bogeys, the Ilkley star bounced back brilliantly with five birdies to take the clubhouse lead at -5.

Speaking to the T&A about his record breaking day at Ilkley Golf Club, Berrisford said: “It’s a pretty amazing achievement really.

“I didn’t realise what the record was until after I’d finished, so it was a very nice bonus I suppose. Chasing the record, or even considering it achievable was something that didn’t cross my mind. My sole focus was on trying to win on the day.

“I was very shocked to find out what I’d achieved after coming back to the clubhouse after my rounds, but it was a nice shock. There was a lot of people there to congratulate me, including my mates. It was great to celebrate the achievement with everyone at Ilkley Golf Club.”

Reflecting on his record breaking performance, Berrisford said: "It was really good despite the difficult conditions we were playing in. It was very windy and rainy so it makes my score even more pleasing.

"It was very closely fought until the last nine holes where I managed to score three under to seal the win.

"Throughout the day, my worry was that we wouldn't get it played because the conditions were pretty awful. Thankfully, once it cleared I was able to push on and play a a better game.

"I didn't miss a shot and I'd go as far as saying that it was the best nine holes I've ever played."

Having his name on the leaderboard at Ilkley Golf Club is something that Berrisford is treasuring.

He said: "Some of the names on the board are quite ridiculous, so to have my name up alongside these golfers is quite surreal. It's part of history.

"My family are very proud, especially my father who is a big part of this achievement. Hopefully there's more to come in the future because I'm loving my golf at the minute."

He added: "I'm also extremely grateful for the support I've had from everyone at Ilkley Golf Club throughout the year. I've loved every tournament, particularly Club Scratch."

Berrisford returns to action on Tuesday (August 1) when he travels to Bournemouth to play in the English Amateurs.
