IT has been a remarkable few days for 14-year-old Bingley St Ives golfer Harry Phillips.

Having shot the joint-lowest individual score (73) at the Bradford Golf Union’s prestigious Team Championship over the weekend in a field full of men, he travelled to Middlesbrough as one of the youngest in the field and won the Yorkshire Union’s Under-16 Championship on Tuesday.

The Team Championship was deservedly won by Bradford Golf Club, and the consistent trio of Darren Rands, Mark Beever and Huey Cunningham, but it was Phillips’ performance that caught the eye.

Bradford Union president Simon Tabel said: “Harry’s very ambitious and he’s already made his senior debut for the Bradford Scratch League team, one of the youngest ever to do so.

“He’s keen to progress as far as he can and he’s building very well in terms of trying to make something out of golf as a career.”

On what makes Phillips stand out at such a young age, Tabel said: “With that 73 at the Team Championship, you could just see that he’s a very calm player who doesn’t show a lot of emotions.

“He’s played 10 matches for our junior side this season, against lads with plus handicaps that are four years older than him, and he’s beaten them.

“In the Bradford leagues, he’s been holding his own against very experienced adult players too.

“With the Team Championship, the key is that all three of you play as consistently as you can, as often two do well and the other struggles a bit, which is what happened with Bingley St Ives on Sunday.

“Harry showed there and in Middlesbrough that he’s good over 18 or 36 holes too.”

Phillips had to mount a comeback to win in the North-East, with Tabel saying: “Most of the lads there were older than him and he opted to play in the U16s event, despite being eligible for the U14s one.

He played really well in making 70 and 72, but was three behind after the morning.

“He was alongside the lad who was in the lead after the first round and produced some superb golf in the afternoon to win by a stroke.”

Tabel admits there is a great team spirit among the Bradford Union’s juniors, which has been on show in Middlesbrough and beyond.

He said: “Harry spent a lot of time with (Shipley’s) Benjy Saia on Tuesday, who finished fourth in the U16s event.

“Benjy was actually defending that title from last year, but he seemed just as pleased for Harry to win this week as when he took home the trophy in 2022.

“The juniors struggled a bit in the Inter-District Team Championship this year (as have the seniors, who have only won one of their five matches so far) and finished bottom, but it’s a young team who’ll all be together for next season.

“They have a good team spirit and all support each other, even though results have not always gone their way.

“That’s what needed for them coming up through the ranks.

“Even though the league is over, we have got the Yorkshire Junior six-man Team Championships in a fortnight, and with the form Harry is in, I’m hoping for us to do well.”
