BRADFORD Golf Union captain Andrew Busfield has admitted that South Bradford Golf Club may well be the team to beat next season following the club’s success this year.

It comes after their latest triumph where Busfield and teammate Oliver Tasker partnered to great effect to claim victory in the Inter Club Foursomes Championship at Cleckheaton and District Golf Club on Sunday.

They defeated Craig Smith and Darren Rands of The Bradford Golf Club by a score of three and one, and it topped off a remarkable campaign for everyone at South Bradford, with the West Yorkshire side having already won the Division One Scratch League, the prestigious single stroke and Inter Club Fourball Championship on April 30 and the Nine-Hole Clubs Team Championship.

“We are already thinking about next year and discussing various things with the captain,“ said Busfield.

“It’s going to be a very tough task to follow but we’ve now set the benchmark for what we can achieve, and it’s now about replicating the success we’ve had in some way.

“Yes, perhaps we are the team to beat, but we’ve got a very strong field and we are adding players to the team on a frequent basis now so that we have strong backup for whenever we go into a competition. This season is done but we are always looking forward.”

Reflecting on his and Tasker’s victory at the Inter Club Foursomes Championship on Sunday, Busfield said: “Oliver has been in fine form and has been very consistent throughout the whole season, so I was quietly confident that he would show up on Sunday to give us the best chance of winning.

“Of course, I’ve played as Oli’s partner on a lot of occasions at South Bradford, but what gave us more confidence as a pairing on Sunday was that Oli had been a member at Cleckheaton Golf Club for eight years, so his course knowledge and knowledge of the greens gave us a bigger advantage.”

He added: “We got off to a great start and won the opening two holes, which gave us an early confidence-booster. For us, and although our opposition did claw it back, we kept our cool and was able to take the victory on the final nine holes.”

Tasker, who did secure first spot with his teammates in this year’s Division One Scratch League, recently claimed victory at the Bingley St Ives Salver competition, which signalled his first ever individual event victory.

And Busfield believes that the young South Bradford golfer will only go from strength-to-strength now that he’s got that winning feeling.

He said: “Oli has noticeably improved over the last three seasons, and it’s been great to see.

“He’s shown a lot of quality in some of his performances, but I think for him it was important to start turning those performances into wins, which he’s done in the past year or so. I can only see him going from strength-to-strength now that he has a few titles under his belt.”
