Keighley Cougars made it two wins from two in Betfred League 1, as visitors Workington Town were put to the sword in a 10-try display yesterday, writes Harvey Redmonds.
The hosts ended up recording a comprehensive 58-16 victory, which keeps them top of the table on points difference.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the seventh minute against Workington, with Mark Ioane crashing over to make it 4-0 and Jack Miller adding the extras.
The scoreline soon got even better for the Cougars as skipper Ellis Robson burrowed his way over for their second converted try.
Miller, who reached 1,000 career points in the opening day win over Cornwall last week, improved his afternoon even further when he gathered his own kick through was to score the third converted try of the game.
At 18-0 in front, Keighley were already on easy street, and they added a fourth try when Dan Parker scored with a beautiful effort just a minute after coming off the bench.
Miller’s conversion stretched the home side’s lead even further but Workington got back into the game through JJ Key.
He was put through a gap by former Super League player Jarrod Sammut to score, and the subsequent conversion from Carl Forber made the score 24-6.
But Cougars were not rocked by that try from the visitors and scored twice more before the break.
First, some brilliant play by both Parker and Miller helped set up Brandon Pickersgill for his first try of the game, before Junior Sa’u found a gap in the Town line to score his first try of the League 1 season.
Miller kept up his perfect record from the kicking tee too, as Keighley went into the interval at 36-6 ahead.
Workington started the second half brightly and scored following a strong break from Matty Henson, which was finished off by Key for his second converted try of the game.
After a trio of penalties for the Cougars saw Workington’s Christopher Taylor sent to the bin, Oscar Thomas capitalised straight away to cross the whitewash from a good offload by Parker.
Miller added the extras and Cougars kept up the pressure, with Sa’u going over for his second try of the game and Keighley’s eighth.
Another successful conversion from Miller increased Keighley’s advantage but Town never gave up and hooker Henson found his way over the line to make it 48-16.
Aaron Brown was then sent to the bin for the Cougars after a late tackle, but this failed to knock the Cougars off their stride, as Ioane scored his second of the game with 10 minutes to go.
Miller added the extras, but he failed to make it the perfect 10 from the tee, as he missed his conversion attempt from Pickersgill’s try in the dying moments.
It did not matter in the grand scheme of things, as Cougars’ 58-16 win sets them up nicely for their Good Friday clash at West Yorkshire rivals Hunslet, the only other side in the division with a played two, won two record in League 1 so far.
That would set Keighley up nicely for their upcoming break, as with only nine teams in the league this year, the first Sunday of April marks their 'bye week' in the first half of the season.
